Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is finally getting a mode that probably should have been included from day one: Ranked Mode. The addition comes as part of Balance Patch 2.5, and there are a few interesting rules attached to how ranked matches will work.
RANK MATCH: Matches with stakes for ranking. You earn (and can lose) rank standing, and your rank badge is shown to opponents. Rank is automatically a 3 out of 5 set, and characters are locked in until the set is complete.
Upon one player “winning” 3 out of 5 Rank Matches in a set, players can continue the set and change characters. Any subsequent matches within this set do not change ranking.
XP is completely unrelated to your rank.
A best-of-five format is definitely an interesting choice for ranked play, especially since players won’t be able to swap characters until someone wins three matches. Once the ranked portion of the set is over, both players can continue fighting and change characters, but those additional matches won’t affect their rankings.
Badges are also being introduced to make it easier to see where players stand. Character ranks are represented through 10 different badges, although the highest one isn’t actually obtainable just yet.
AdvertisementYour Character rank is shown as a badge. There are 10 badges you can earn, in two groups:
Beginner ranks (Badges 1-3): earned by doing placement matches. Your score will be calibrated over some number of games (not a fixed number). You start at Rookie, then move to Apprentice when you complete the first third of the matches you need, then move to Acolyte when you reach the second third of the matches you need.
Master ranks (Badges 4-10): Once you are out of placement rounds, you will be assigned a badge based on your rank points for that character. The skill ranges from roughly 1000-2000 rank points. Badge 10 is not accessible right now, ooh mysterious what can it be?!
Balance Patch 2.5 includes plenty of other changes across the board as well. Ozai, for example, has received additional animations for several moves, which should help make him feel more complete compared to his original showing. The update also includes fixes and adjustments for several characters, all of which can be found in the official patch notes.
