Today is a good day if you happen to be a fan of crunching rocks for fun and profit in Elite Dangerous. That’s because the latest patch to the spaceship sandbox has a whole bunch of space mining additions, not the least of which being a new vehicle to do some of that mining in.
One of the major highlights is the Rhino SRV, a heavy-duty mining buggy that features the ability to extract materials from a planet’s surface with the similarly all-new surface mining gameplay loop. As with other vehicles added to the game, access to the Rhino does require that players buy it from the cash shop for now, with availability for in-game credits coming later. A video from YouTube channel The Buur Pit previews both the Rhino and surface mining in action below.
Other mining-centric additions made in this update include adjustments to things like mining time, resource yield and density, recharge rates, and the percentage of a commodity within a single mined unit. There are also some new commodities that can be gained from mining, including magnesite and rubies, though those only come from surface mining. Finally, the patch has added the new Under Siege operation where players must take back an outpost and a whole list of bug fixes.
