Sony has released PS5 update 26.07-14.20.00 | 26.07-14.20.00.07 today, October 21, and this is a minor firmware patch for gamers, but a big one for Sony and even Take-Two Interactive.
Confused? Allow me to explain. But before that, let’s dive into the actual system update released today.
RELATED GTA 6 Features "Significantly Narrower" Roads Than GTA 5; Devs Wanted Weapons System to Be More Like Red Dead Redemption 2 Vehicle chases are often a big part of any Grand Theft Auto game, and if you find it easy to drive around pedestrians and other vehicles in GTA 5, that will prove to be harder in GTA 6.PS5 gamers will see the file clock in at 1.2 GB, which is par for the course when it comes to minor firmware updates.
PS5 Receives New System Update a Month Before GTA 6 Releases
Per Sony, today’s system update does the following:
- We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.
As expected, it’s not a big system patch that adds anything front-facing to gamers. However, here’s where things get interesting.
At the start of the month, Sony released the 14.10 system update, which, like other system patches, is required in order to go online. Unfortunately for Sony, that firmware has since been hacked by the homebrew community, which presents a huge problem for Sony and Take-Two Interactive — the parent company of Rockstar Games, which is the studio developing Grand Theft Auto 6.
It’s been reported previously that GTA 6 will require the 26.07-14.10 firmware version to run on the PS5, and having that firmware compromised presents a ton of problems given how some PS5 games are now able to run on PC without an emulator.
RELATED GTA 6 Gets a Massive 25-Minute Gameplay Leak That Includes Spoilers With just over a month left until the launch of GTA 6 on November 19, a new leak has appeared online, revealing several parts of the game that Rockstar has not officially shown yet. While the PS5 jailbreak hasn’t been made public or shared among the homebrew community, it’s still a major security concern for Sony: What if it gets released and the biggest video game launch of all time can be played on PC, illegally?
This might also be one of the main reasons why Take-Two is rumored to target the PC release of GTA 6 in Q1 2027, which means that if this rumor does come to fruition, PC gamers will be able to play GTA 6 less than six months after its console release.
If this new firmware is hacked, expect Sony to release another one soon thereafter. If there’s one game worth protecting at all costs, it’s GTA 6, since you just know this will establish new sales and revenue records. And with Sony and Take-Two’s co-marketing deal in place for GTA 6, expect the game to sell the most on PS5.
GTA 6 will be released on November 19 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
