New PS5 Firmware Update Available Now as Sony Cracks Down on Jailbreaks

Sony has released another system software update for PS5, hot on the heels of the last one from less than a fortnight ago.

Version 26.07-14.22.00 is available to download and install now, and the singular patch note makes it fairly clear what it's targeting:

• We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.

These fairly minor-sounding firmware updates are actually pretty serious ones for Sony, as it aims to prevent hackers and modders from jailbreaking the PS5.

This has seen a significant rise lately, thanks to a perfect storm of contempt for PlayStation among hardcore users (no more discs), inflated prices, and AI-assisted tools that make opening up the console far easier than it might've been previously.

The situation has been gathering pace over the last month or two, and Sony is racing to plug holes in PS5's security to stop people from installing emulators and pirated software on hacked consoles.

Sony's speedy response to the jailbreaking boom has drawn further ire from the pirates, which will no doubt make them more determined to crack the PS5.
